Introduction
The NW Justice Forum fosters the gathering of individuals committed to, or interested in learning about, the principles and values of Restorative Justice. We gather to increase understanding, share practical application, ensure cultural inclusion, and explore theoretical implications of living and working restoratively in the Northwest.
The Northwest Justice Forum is seeking proposals from Artists, Musicians and Poets for its 17th Annual Forum in 2023. We know that Restorative Justice can be expressed in myriad ways, not least of all through the arts. The NW Justice Forum is aiming to highlight and promote these expressions through visual art, music, and performance. Do you have a talent or skill that demonstrates the values and principles of Restorative Justice, such as healing, community strength, resilience, connection, empowerment, accountability, unity, or growth? If so, please submit your proposal today!
Theme: Expressions of Restorative Justice
Three key areas of focus for the conference are:
While art, music, performance and poetry with a primary focus on "Expressions of Restorative Justice” are particularly sought, any art that furthers the understanding and/or implementation of restorative justice will be considered. Applicants should consider and highlight those aspects of their proposal that align with the three foci of the Forum’s theme (bulleted above). Presentations/performances/art about work that aligns with restorative justice but is not called “restorative justice” will also be considered.
Audience
The conference is designed for restorative justice practitioners, justice and court system personnel, victim services/advocacy staff, people with lived experience of the court system/formerly incarcerated individuals, law enforcement, school personnel, students, community members, and non-profit service providers.
Art Displays
If submitting a piece of physical art, please specify the dimensions and weight of the piece, and indicate whether it will stand on its own or need to be hanged, etc.
Performance Format
If you are submitting a proposal for a type of performance (poetry reading, theatrical or musical performance, etc.) we encourage creative proposals that emphasize the values and principals of Restorative Justice. Due to the artistic and fluid nature of this request, we are interested in hearing from YOU about what the format of your performance would look like. Is it a skit? Great! How long is your skit, and what would you need? Is it spoken word poetry? Fantastic! How much time would you need in the spotlight? Please be specific about your format needs and, upon acceptance, the NWJF will do its best to accommodate.
Performance Length
The length of your performance should be clearly articulated in your proposal. The NWJF may request that you adjust the time based on Forum needs.
Performance Coordinator
All performances involving more than one presenter need a designated contact person who will serve as the primary liaison to NWJF in terms of conference planning and communication. Coordinators are responsible for organizing, introducing and facilitating their performance as well as providing NWJF with all necessary information and materials (if applicable) prior to the conference.
Audio-Visual Equipment
It is important that you indicate in your proposal any audio-visual needs that you have for your performance. We will provide more information about what is available at the venue once those details are confirmed. The Performance Coordinator will be responsible to bring any specialized equipment or props not supplied by the venue.
Performer Discount
Performers/Artists/Poets may attend the day of their performance for free. If presenters wish to attend additional days, they will pay the regular rate.
Performer(s)/Poets/Artist Registration
If you wish to attend sessions on the day of your performance, we ask that you register for the workshop sessions you would like to attend (even though there is no cost). If you attend additional days, please register for these as well. Registration forms will be available approximately on or before March 2023 and can be found on the Northwest Justice Forum website.
Submission Process and Deadline
Proposals are due March 14, 2023. Proposals will be selected on the basis of relevance to the conference theme, and to create a diverse program. To submit a proposal please complete the electronic application above.
Your proposal must include all of the following information:

Proposal Selection
Proposals will be reviewed by the NWJF Steering Committee. Proposals that align most closely with the conference theme will receive highest priority.
Notification
You will be notified via e-mail of your proposal’s acceptance by mid-March, 2023. In the meantime, please pencil in the forum dates on your calendar to ensure your availability upon notification of acceptance.

- Performance Coordinator: If there is more than one performer in your act, designate who will serve as the Performance Coordinator.
- Give the full name, official title, address, email, and telephone numbers for each artist/performer.
- Submit a short bio for each artist/performer.
2) Performance Length
- Specify your preference for the length of your performance.
- Specify whether you are willing to offer your performance more than once during the conference.
3) Descriptive Title and Short Description
- Provide your recommended performance/art piece title and a description of your performance (no more than 100 words). If accepted, your title and description will be used in conference materials. We may edit either the title or the description, but will discuss any changes with you before publication.
4) Performance Scheduling
- We will schedule your performance based on your availability in conjunction with the needs of the Forum.
